Most Repeated CBSE Questions

Derive formula for range R

This appears as a 3–5 mark question almost every year. Key steps:

  • x = v₀cosθ · t → t = x/v₀cosθ
  • Substitute in y = v₀sinθ·t − ½gt²
  • Set y = 0 for range → factor out t → T = 2v₀sinθ/g
  • R = v₀cosθ × T = v₀²sin2θ/g
🎯
Marks Strategy

Write all intermediate steps. CBSE awards step marks. Never skip steps in derivation problems.

Prove: same range for θ and 90°−θ

R(θ) = v₀²sin2θ/g. For (90°−θ): R = v₀²sin(2×(90°−θ))/g = v₀²sin(180°−2θ)/g = v₀²sin2θ/g. Same! This proof appears frequently as a 2-mark question.

Show maximum range at 45°

R = v₀²sin2θ/g. Maximum when sin2θ = 1 → 2θ = 90° → θ = 45°. R_max = v₀²/g. Dead simple, but asked every 2 years in CBSE.

🔬
CBSE 2024 Trend Shift

From 2024, CBSE has included more case-based questions (5 marks) involving projectile motion scenarios. The assertion-reason format has also returned. Prepare for both.

🔍 NEET PYQ Pattern Analysis

2023 NEET

A ball thrown at 45° with v₀ from top of a tower. Find where it hits ground. (Horizontal projectile variant — classic setup)

Horizontal Proj
2022 NEET

UCM: A particle of mass m in circle of radius r. Find centripetal force in terms of time period T. (Standard: F = 4π²mr/T²)

UCM
2021 NEET

Two projectiles with same initial speed. One at 30°, one at 60°. Find ratio of ranges. (Same range! — standard result)

Complementary Angles
Most Common NEET Mistake (Costs 4 marks)

For centripetal force problems: Students write F = mv²/r but forget this is the NET force toward center, not an extra force. In banked roads, students add centripetal force as a separate force in FBD. WRONG! It's the resultant of real forces.

JEE Main Trend 2022–2024

Numerical type questions (integer answer) have replaced many MCQs. You need exact numerical answers — no guessing. Topics like "velocity at height h" and "range from cliff" appear 1–2 times per shift.

🔴 JEE Advanced Depth

2023 JEE Advanced

A projectile is fired at angle θ on an inclined plane of angle α. Find the range along the incline. Multi-correct MCQ.

Inclined Plane Projectile
2022 JEE Advanced

Two balls A and B thrown simultaneously. Find minimum distance between them during flight. Requires relative motion framework.

Relative Projectile
2020 JEE Advanced

Paragraph: Ball on turntable — find centripetal acceleration in rotating frame. Combined UCM + pseudo-force concept.

UCM + Rotating Frame

🧠 JEE Advanced: What Makes Problems Hard

Non-standard coordinate system

Instead of x-horizontal, y-vertical, JEE Advanced rotates the problem: x along incline, y perpendicular to incline. The component of gravity changes: g∥ = gsinα, g⊥ = gcosα. This confuses most students.

🎯
How to Handle

Always draw a clear diagram first. Label ALL forces and their components in the chosen coordinate system. Then treat as a standard 2D problem in that frame.

Multiple conditions simultaneously

JEE Advanced problems often have 2–3 conditions: "ball lands on incline AND at same height AND velocity is horizontal at landing." Each condition gives one equation. You need all of them.

JEE Advanced Trap

"Multi-correct" means more than one option can be right. If you select only one when two are correct, you get negative marks. For 2D motion multi-correct, always check ALL four options methodically.
