1. The Dimensional Pitfall

The Concept

Dimensional correctness is a necessary but not sufficient condition for physical correctness.

The Mistake:

Assuming that because an equation is dimensionally correct, it is a valid physical formula.

Example: 1/2 mv² = mgh (Correct) vs mv² = mgh (Dimensionally Correct, Physically Wrong)

Mentor's Intuition

Dimensions only tell you the "type" of quantity. They cannot see pure numbers or constants like 1/2, π, or e. Always verify the physics behind the algebra.

2. Power-of-Prefix Errors

❌ Common Error

1 cm² = 10⁻² m²

Students often forget that the square applies to the prefix too.

✅ Correct Logic

1 cm² = (10⁻² m)² = 10⁻⁴ m²

Always write units as (Value Prefix Unit)^Power.

3. Rounding Recklessness

In CBSE boards, significant figures are strictly evaluated. Rounding off mid-calculation is the fastest way to drift away from the correct answer.

Rule of Thumb

  • Addition/Subtraction: Limit to the least decimal places.
  • Multiplication/Division: Limit to the least significant figures.

Exam-Specific Warnings

JEE Main

Beware of **Option Elimination Trap**. Sometimes two options have the same dimensions, but one is physically impossible (e.g., negative time).

NEET

Focus on **Least Count of Vernier Calipers**. The Zero Error correction is often applied with the wrong sign (remember: Actual = Measured - Error).

CBSE Boards

Failure to use **Standard Symbols** (like using 'kg.' instead of 'kg') costs 0.5 marks per occurrence.
