📊 PYQ Analysis: Last 10 Years

Previous Year Questions trends for CBSE, NEET, JEE Main & JEE Advanced

This analysis tells you WHERE to focus your time. High-weightage + high-frequency topics = your priority list. Don't study randomly—study smartly.

CBSE Boards Pattern (2014-2024)

Weightage Distribution

Year Marks Question Types
2024 4 marks MCQ + Case Study
2023 5 marks MCQ + Short Answer
2022 4 marks MCQ + Assertion-Reason
2019-2021 3-5 marks Short + Long Answer
Average: 3-5 marks per year
Trend: Moving towards MCQ + Case Study format

Most Frequent Topics

Topic Frequency
EM Spectrum 90%
Displacement Current 80%
Maxwell's Equations 70%
Wave Properties (c=νλ) 70%
E and B Relation 50%
Applications 60%

CBSE Question Patterns

Pattern 1: EM Spectrum Identification

Example (2023): Name the part of EM spectrum used in (i) radar (ii) to kill germs.

Answer: (i) Microwaves (ii) UV rays

Preparation: Memorize production, detection, and 2-3 applications of each EM wave type.
Pattern 2: Displacement Current Concept

Example (2022): Why did Maxwell introduce the concept of displacement current?

Answer: To make Ampere's law consistent with charge conservation and to explain magnetic field between capacitor plates during charging.

Always explain: Changing E field between capacitor plates acts like current, producing magnetic field.
Pattern 3: Wave Property Calculations

Example (2024): Find wavelength of EM wave with frequency 500 THz.

Solution: λ = c/ν = (3×10⁸)/(500×10¹²) = 600 nm (visible light)

CBSE loves: Given frequency → find wavelength → identify spectrum region

NEET Pattern (2015-2024)

Weightage

Average: 1-2 questions per year

Marks: 4-8 marks out of 180

Difficulty: Easy to Medium

Many students skip EM Waves thinking it's low weightage. But these 4-8 marks can decide your rank difference of 1000-2000!

High-Frequency Topics

Topic Questions
EM Spectrum Applications 8/10 years
c = νλ calculations 7/10 years
E/B = c relation 6/10 years
Maxwell's equations 5/10 years

NEET Favorite Questions

NEET 2023 Type

The ratio of amplitude of magnetic field to amplitude of electric field for an electromagnetic wave is:

(A) 1/c (B) c (C) c² (D) 1/c²

NEET 2022 Type

Which of the following has maximum frequency?

(A) Microwave (B) UV (C) X-ray (D) Visible

NEET Strategy:
  • Focus on direct formula questions (80% of NEET EM questions)
  • Memorize EM spectrum order and applications
  • Practice c=νλ calculations with units
  • Know E/B=c relation cold

JEE Main Pattern (2014-2024)

Weightage Analysis

Average: 2-3 questions per year

Marks: 8-12 marks out of 100

Difficulty: Medium to High

Session Questions
Jan 2024 2 (Intensity, Radiation pressure)
Apr 2023 3 (Spectrum, Displacement current, Energy)
Jul 2022 2 (Maxwell, Wave properties)

Topic Distribution

Topic Weightage
Displacement Current High
Energy & Intensity High
Radiation Pressure Medium
Maxwell's Equations Medium
EM Spectrum Medium

JEE Main Question Patterns

Pattern: Displacement Current Numerical

Parallel plate capacitor with circular plates of radius 2 cm is charged at rate dQ/dt = 5A. Find displacement current.

Pattern: Energy Density & Intensity

EM wave has E₀ = 60 V/m. Find average intensity.

JEE Main Trend: Questions are becoming more numerical and less conceptual. Practice calculation speed!

JEE Advanced Pattern (2014-2024)

Characteristics

Frequency: 1-2 questions per year

Marks: 3-6 marks

Difficulty: High

Nature: Multi-concept integration

JEE Advanced NEVER asks direct formula questions. Always twisted, always multi-chapter, always requires deep thinking.

Question Types

  • Integer type numerical (40%)
  • Multi-correct MCQ (30%)
  • Matrix match (20%)
  • Comprehension (10%)
Prepare for questions that combine EM waves with:
  • Modern Physics
  • Optics (polarization)
  • Magnetism/Induction

JEE Advanced Twists

JEE Advanced 2019 Style

Electromagnetic wave traveling in vacuum has E = E₀ cos(kz-ωt) along x-axis. Wave is incident normally on a perfectly conducting wall at z=a. Find position where electric field is always zero.

Difficulty: Very Hard

Common trap: JEE Advanced will give you all formulas you "need," but in wrong context. You must identify which formula actually applies to the situation.
